Where Do I Start?

Click on the tabs at the top of the page to learn about each early literacy skill.

Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they know how to read and write.

The last tab will lead you to more online resources to share at home, such as songs, stories, and booklists.

Read for the Fun of It

Raise a Reader is the Early Literacy component of Read for the Fun of It!, funded by the Erwin and Barbara Mautner Charitable Foundation.

Read for The Fun Of It! doesn't end after Raise A Reader! Special library events such as SeussFest, Summer Library Kickoff, and even Teen Read Week are all a part of Raising A Reader too! Receive program news in your In-box each month, when you include your email address on your Alvin Sherman Library card application or sign up for e-news.

What is Raise a Reader?

Raise a Reader is a free program designed to encourage early literacy for children starting from birth. After storytimes (September-May), librarians share tips and tricks to get your child ready to read. For more information, please call the Public Library Services Reference Desk (954-262-5477) and ask for a Youth Services Librarian.
