Substance Abuse/Addictions and Critical Issues in Systems Theories

This course addresses the application of modern and postmodern ideas to the concept of addiction.  Traditional treatment approaches such as disease model and 12 step approach, harm reduction model, biological psychiatry, and the ideas of cybernetics, postmodernism, and social constructionism will be discussed and considered. Students will attend to the prevalence of the wider societal context (including ethical and legal issues) and cultural dominant stories within each critical issue; for example, the exploration of addiction themes in culture and the interaction of such themes with gender, race, class, and feminist theory from both a modern and postmodern perspective.
